How to Get Venture Funding, page 21
Materials Needed to Approach a VC
This briefing has already alluded to most of the materials you need to prepare
before you approach VCs. Preparing these materials is good business discipline
even if you aren’t seeking funding. The preparation will help you articulate key
business value propositions, hurdles and plans.
While you and your business team are presumably the best ones to articulate your
own business model, because the quality of these presentation materials is crucial,
it might make sense to hire professional consultants, writers and graphics people
on an as-needed basis to help with their preparation.
You should prepare:
A cover e-mail
An executive summary
A PowerPoint slide show
A business plan
A financial model
A demo or prototype
E-Mail
The cover e-mail is controversial. You may not wish to use it in some or any of your VC approaches.
The e-mail should start with your referral to the VC. It should include a brief description of your
business value proposition. It should conclude with an action item. Keep it short and sweet!
You should attach a copy of your executive summary, in Word or PDF format. It’s a good idea
to send the e-mail in straight text format (rather than as HTML).
